The “open bible” in the shield’s upper left corner represents one of the two principal ways (Word and Sacrament) by which Christ speaks to us and by which we, as the church, are commissioned to speak to the world in His name as we await His return. Thus, the open bible reminds us specifically that the read and preached Word are “means of grace” through which Christ continues to minister comfort, strength and encouragement to His people.
